Animal Wisdom

Animal Wisdom – Vulture

When I was a kid growing up in northern California, Elizabeth Terwilliger was a local legend as a naturalist. Known always as “Mrs. Terwilliger,” she seemed to be about 80 years old throughout my entire childhood and she was fun, funny and fearless.

She was the recipient of numerous local and national awards, including the President’s Volunteer Action Award in 1984. While accepting the award at the White House, she shared one of her famous stories about “Mr. Vulture” and had President Reagan holding his arms over his head in the “V” position, representing a vulture in flight.

Although she had been warned by White House handlers not to engage with the President during the ceremony, Mrs. Terwilliger had her own ideas and with her signature aplomb, she made the ceremony joyous and memorable. As all her fans knew she would.

I share this story because I think it is so fitting that Mrs. Terwilliger demonstrated her sovereignty to make her own choices and delighted the President and audience with her peaceful presence as she shared a story about the Vulture.

Mrs. Terwilliger embodied the Vulture Wisdom that I share on this blog.

What most resonated with me was ‘take my time; see my own beauty and plece in life; and I am wo I am and I stand in my power”. Wow! Such a powerful animal, that I used to have prejudice about… My perspective shifted.

I discoverd this short video that shows how they use ascendent air currents (heated by the sun) to be able to lift their 11kg body and flight. If you’re a heavy bird, you have to be inteligent and use resources available! I found it fascinating.
